Selective
Curriculum 2000
Selective 1- MBChB level II.
In Curriculum 2000, both Selective 1 and 2 were offered in conjunction between Disciplines of Public Health Medicine, Family Medicine and the Centre for Rural Health.
The Discipline of Public Health Medicine assisted with the training of the small group facilitators, as well as performing much of the facilitation for the selective module.
The outputs of the Selective 1 includes patient studies, performing home visits and writing a long case report, identifying and prioritising community-health problems, and individually writing a literature review on the topic identified from a community problem.
Selective 2 – MBChB level III.
One of the strengths of Selective programme is the continuity of learning which the student experiences by returning to their homes where selective 1 was carried out one year previously.
The outputs of the Selective 2 include patient studies, performing follow-up home visits and writing another long case report, conducting a community-based health promotion intervention and preparing a research project protocol.
A series of lectures on Research Methods was conducted as part of Selective 2 in preparation for the protocol development and the Research Project. These lectures are not compulsory and are not formally assessed and the attendance has been pitiful.
The small group facilitators need to mark the student reports, which include both group and individual components, and also to assess the oral presentations of the various groups on their community-based health promotion interventions. Sadly the Research Project was discontinued a few years ago because of problems of obtaining sufficient research sites, and also obtaining ethical approval for various student studies.
